Waldmann writing instruments: products of timeless elegance
For 90 years Waldmann has produced high quality writing utensils from solid 925 sterling silver and plated brass with a surprising diversity of forms and variations.
The history of the firm began in 1918 as a manufacturer of high quality mechanical pencils of gold and silver. The company is located, then as now, in Birkenfeld near Pforzheim, the traditional German jewellery metropolis in the Black Forest. Everything leaving its own workshops has been produced using tradition as well as modern technology and a high degree of automation by professional craftsmen with many years of experience. The commitment to innovation and intricate metal-working has a long tradition. For example the four-coloured pencil that received the silver medal at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1937. This writing instrument was exceptional at the time on account of its function and design. Today Waldmann sees itself as a specialist for exceptional surfaces and remains true to its maxim "Made in Germany".
The development and production of fountain pens and ball pens of metals such as brass, silver or 18-carat gold followed! Waldmann ballpoint pens with a special twist action for two and four colours, as well as the legendary "Two in One" from 1972 were awarded worldwide patents. This pen contained an ink cartridge integrated into its shaft and could be used at the other end as a fountain pen as well. By this time international companies had long since become aware of the innovative writing instrument specialists, among them the jewellery industry. A further area developed for Waldmann from this association. In 1986, Waldmann could expand with the licensed production and worldwide sales of writing implements for the French haute couture label "Ted Lapidus" – Paris. Ten years later a second haute couture label, "Carven" – Paris, was added. Today these specialists are distributors in 60 countries around the world. Waldmann products are also sought after as valuable trophies or are produced for special occasions at the request of clients. The company developed a limited edition of a silver fountain pen for the 150th anniversary of the "America’s Cup" yacht race. The finest of waves were incorporated in silver, covered with ten layers of translucent Neptune blue lacquer, engraved by hand with a nautical chart motif and decorated with diamonds. In 2001, Waldmann was the official maker of an extravagant writing instrument for the Byron Nelson Golf Tournament in the USA. And in 2002, Waldmann could even be admired in the cinema! The original 2-colour ballpoint pen, already patented in the 1950s, received a role in Steven Spielberg’s film "Catch Me If You Can" with the Hollywood stars Leonardo di Caprio and Tom Hanks. After the film was released, Waldmann brought this retro-design writing instrument onto the market again, this time also including a modern PDA-touchscreen refill.
In 2008 this historical company will celebrate its 90th anniversary. This was an occasion to produce 250 limited edition and individually numbered piston filler fountain pens of solid sterling silver. The value of this fountain pen with its 18-carat gold nib lies in the fine detail. The clip, the end piece and the decorative ring have been produced by hand with lavish, delicate work in brilliant blue lacquer. In addition, the clip is decorated with 3 diamonds which makes the whole fountain pen unique. And thus we come about full circle: tradition and quality, professional work and the glamour of the wide world – Waldmann unites everything in its writing instruments.
